disease concept as well as literature that suggest addiction can come in many forms. People can become addicted to shopping, to gambling, and to sex, amongst other things. At least, that is what the field suggests and as a result, there are many twelve-step groups cropping up. When it comes to substances such as alcohol and physically addictive drugs like cocaine, the disease concept is often embraced. The disease concept regarding alcoholism and addiction is controversial. Many people, especially those who are not in the field or who have no experience with alcoholism, will wonder how the use of a substance can be a disease. Rather, many people would chalk substance abuse up to immoral behavior. In fact, Rush Limbaugh used to downplay addiction and align the attention to it with liberal causes, until he himself became addicted to pharmaceuticals. Also, it should be said that many people drink but they do not become alcoholics. Some people drink to excess, but they learn their lesson and move on. The last thing most people want to do after drinking too much and experiencing the after-effects is to drink again. It is different for alcoholics. It is the drive to continue to consume a substance no matter what the consequences that led societies to research the issue and develop the disease concept. What is addiction? It is something that is difficult to define because even the DSM manual stays away from defining it and rather outlines substance use disorders instead (Kranzler & Li, 2009). Most people think of addiction as being equated with the stereotypical "addict" who cannot get enough of a certain substance. For example, the addict will steal or even kill for his dose of heroin or cocaine. And of course, there are addictions like nicotine and caffeine ...
