to it. No matter what kind of drug a person is using, it is extremely doubtful that they started to take it with even a remote assumption that they
might become addicted. Most people in fact are aware that addiction is a disease yet they do not recognize the symptoms until they are already afflicted; if they ever
recognize them at all. As a sickness, the term addiction generally relates to the physical addiction between the addict and a specific drug. The
addictive substance may be either legal or illegal in its social context. Examples of such substances include but are not limited to: nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines and barbiturates.
Although it is not commonly known, some people can try drugs, and not become addicted. Such people experiment with drugs and then stop without any
desire to ever try them again. The unfortunate reality, however, is that most people are not so lucky. While scientists cannot predict who will and who will become
addicted after initial experimentation, they are sure of the steps along the rocky path to addiction. Knowing the signposts along this route may help some individuals recognize when they have
gotten (or are about to get) "in over-their-heads." Drugs of all kinds do make most people feel "good"; and that is why such people are
influenced to take drugs more than just once or twice. In scientific terms, drug use is a "rewarding behavior" because the high or pleasure it induces tends to reinforce
