crave the experience and are only satisfied by it for a short time - also, addiction is destructive. This doesnt mean that it directly affects your health, or your finances;
the destructive effect can be more subtle than that. In my case, I only realized that I was addicted to comics when I was suddenly deprived of them, and then
I understood the power of the addiction. When I lived in Japan, comics were available everywhere, every day of the
week. I could buy a different one each day, and keep up with a couple of dozen different stories simultaneously, and I didnt notice just how much of my mental
energy was focused on comics. Then I went to Australia for a year, and for the first week I didnt miss my comics, because there were so many new experiences
and culture-jolt to adjust to. Then I started craving comics, but it wasnt until a Japanese tourist gave me a back issue of one of my favorites that I realized
just how much Id missed them. It felt like meeting an old friend. In my own defense, I have to say that Japanese
comics are well-produced and very content-rich. Theyre designed for adult readers, not like the western comics which are aimed only at children, and theyre often sophisticated enough to be used
as the basis for film scripts. Even so, I felt as if my obsession with comics had been a way of escaping from reality, so when I returned to Japan,
I tried to stay away from them. This worked fine until I came to live in the US - and then I
