sources cited. SA148HH.rtf I. Introduction Everyone has moments in their lives, usually when they are very young, where they think that when they
grow up they will change the world. It is a thought that most do have, whether they want to make a difference in the arts or in politics, but most
have the idea at a time when they think that the world revolves around them. Later, they grow up and have to pay bills, deal with their own children and
find out that work is not so easy. Dreams disappear. For most, people grow up and do not make their dreams come true, but for Jane Addams, she grew up
and did change the world. She does note that much of her ideas came from childhood and when she grew up to open Hull House, she wrote a book about
it which begins: " On the theory that our genuine impulses may be connected with our childish experiences, that ones bent may be tracked back to that "No-Mans Land" where
character is formless but nevertheless settling into definite lines of future development, I begin this record with some impressions of my childhood" (Addams, 2001, p.PG). What Jane Addams did when
she grew up was to begin the practice of social work for the very first time. To help the poor, particularly immigrant women, she opened what was called Hull House.
