The differences reflected via gender are quite significant and varied; when adolescents have had restricted interaction with the opposite sex due to attending all-girls or all-boys schools, their initial experiences in co-ed college present somewhat of a challenge in relation to their ability to feel at ease with such an unfamiliar situation. To most, the reality of co-ed environment becomes commonplace as early as preschool and, therefore, does not require any adjustment when students reach college. Challenges aside, one of the most apparent benefits of an all-girls or all-boys school is the absence of sexual distraction when it comes to the inherent interaction between males and females. The ability to focus on ones studies without the influence of hormonal distractions renders a more attentive student and allows for that component of socialization to be contained within the boundaries of weekend dances where this very natural and needed part of life is encouraged to take place. Scholastically speaking, the benefits of single-sex schools have proven time and time again to be highly beneficial to the students. For example, a 2002 study in England conducted by the National Foundation for Educational Research found significant support for the single-sex environment with regard to academic performance.
