Bette Davis. They were usually formulaic rags-to-riches stories that focused upon the heroines struggles to survive. However, people who saw these films were always conscious of the fact
that they were watching a Joan Crawford or Bette Davis film; their acting was oftentimes secondary to their fame as movie stars. This was during the days of Hollywoods
heyday, where glamour reigned supreme and acting craft was reserved for the stage. While this began to change for men with the resurgence in the 1950s of such classically
trained actors as Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift, who immersed themselves in character rather glitz, women were still often being denied the same opportunities to prove their acting skills.
They were frequently relegated to stereotypical roles of sex kitten, bimbo, housewife or mother. However, this began to gradually change as more issue-oriented films were being produced to critical
and popular acclaim in the late 1970s, such as Jane Fondas 1978 Vietnam drama, Coming Home, and 1979s An Unmarried Woman, which featured Jill Clayburgh as a recently divorced woman
who must learn to live as a self-supporting woman and single parent to her teenage daughter. These films helped pave the way for actresses who were interested not simply
in portraying stylish roles but were also interested in exploring characters of strength and substance. Sally Field seemed like an unlikely choice to play working class union organizer Norma Rae
(another film based on a real-life character) in Martin Ritts 1978 production of the same name. She had a long career in Hollywood, which were one-dimensional "perky" girl-next-door television
