and two of the first powerful actors in America, were Edwin Thomas Booth and Edwin Forrest. In many ways they were subtle rivals, both vying for the position of best
actor and most beloved actor of the 19th century as it involved Shakespeare. In the following paper we examine the condition of the Shakespearean theater of the time, and then
discuss the two men individually, and finally providing a comparison and contrast which perhaps indicates that Forrest was the most famous and most beloved of the time. Shakespearean
Theater in the 19th Century "In the United States, Shakespeares plays were performed coast to coast, in large cities, small towns, isolated mining camps, and wherever an audience could be
found. In the 1830s, Alexis de Tocqueville, the famed French chronicler of American society, was surprised to find that Shakespeare was performed in the recesses of the forests of the
New World" (Kennedy, 2002; 0322.html). On the Eastern coast of the United States perhaps one out of every five plays were Shakespearean plays. "In the Midwest from 1800 to 1840,
Shakespeares plays were more frequently staged than those of any other dramatist. After mid-century, the Bards works were produced with as much regularity in the Great Plains and the Far
