aim to facilitate a more advantageous use of resources. One of these paradigms, developed in the field of social sciences in Actor Network Theory. This is a model that has
been used extensively in the public sector. For example in the British National Health Service the model has been the basis of development of technology and its use for better
care of the patients. We may argue that if the model can be used with technology, then it may be adaptable to the same environment and culture in order to
improve the delivery of primary care. If we are to make this argument we need to look at what we mean by
Actor Network Theory, how it has been used in the NHS, and how this may be applied to primary healthcare. Actor Network Theory is a theory that looks at the
way people act and the influences that interact with them to determine their actions. When any individual is undertaking a task, form driving a car to using a computer, there
will be many factors that influence how that task is undertaken (Hanseth, 2002). These may be external influences such as conditions and regulations, as well as the users ability and
the constraints of any equipment that is being used. These different factors all come together. In short, the way any task is undertaken in not in a void, and as
such has a great number of influences (Hanseth, 2002). The result of this is that any action undertaken should be examined in the context of the influencing factors. When we
use actor network theory, this is the way the paradigm operates, the different factors form the network and the individual undertaking the task is the network (Hanseth, 2002).
