Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 36 page paper considers the basic ideas of Actor Network Theory (ANT). The theory is explored in the context of the UK National Health Service; The NHS. The writer identifies the drivers behind the use of ANT to implement electronic patient record systems, the political nature of implementation, the aims of implementation, the impact of the actors and how the model may be used by the NHS in a prescriptive and interpretative manner. The bibliography cites 60 sources.

may try to harness the characteristics of interaction theory in order to maximise the return and value of any system that is implemented which makes use of interaction. The
use of technology is also proliferating, with the potential to reduce the barriers to efficiently by the time provision of information in addition to the facilitation of increased and accurate
communication. The value of this in a health service setting is a potential area for decreasing bureaucracy, increasing time spent with the patient, increasing accuracy and therefore increasing quality of
care. It has been shown that tools such as electronic patient records can add a great deal to the system of healthcare (Atkinson and Peel, 1998). Technology impacts on the
care of the patients and the working environment in which it is introduced or developed. Actor network theory is a model that has been used extensively in the public sector
of the National Health Service for the development of information systems. The first research objective of this thesis is to define actor network theory and define actor network theory approach
that can be used for the study of local implementation strategies. The second research objective is to demonstrate that this approach can contribute in practice to the understanding of implementation
of the electronic patient record. To undertake this there will be an extensive review from current literature regarding information system and the National Health Service, the role of electronic patient
records and the perception that determine the interpretation of Actor Network Theory in this domain. When considering the use of the theory it will be noted that the majority of
commentators consider the theory to be interpretive rather than qualitative. These systems tend to focus on the interaction and the results of the interaction in a reactive manner, rather than
