facility does have an appraisal program under which employees are reviewed semiannually. Only one review is a "formal" one that generates permanent records in employees personnel files. The
other is a mid-year assessment of where the employee is, how s/he is progressing and what remains to be accomplished before the next scheduled formal review. Of the two,
nearly everyone at the facility views the informal "check up" as the most important. The formal review is guided by a script of
sorts. The manager reviews required questions and topics well in advance of the scheduled review date, making her own assessment of the progress the employee has made over the
course of the year. The manager and employee then meet to review the managers assessment of the employees performance, discussing issues on which they may have differing perspectives.
The two devise a plan for the upcoming year in this meeting, and the employee signs the review sheet acknowledging that the review did indeed take place. Signature does
not imply agreement with any of the statements, only that the employee is aware of what the review sheet contains. The informal review
takes place approximately halfway through the year, and as stated, the purpose is to review the employees progress on those items to which the employee and the manager agreed during
the formal annual review. The manager may give the employee feedback at any time, however. Employees are expected to know their roles and responsibilities upon completion of training,
and facility management believes that delaying in calling attention to any deficiencies only exacerbates the problem and creates ill will within the business. Thus the performance review is more
