order to fit into their particular society in one way or another. Most people, in real life as well, know that it is necessary to act or perform in society
in order to be accepted and in order to essentially survive. Compromises of self, secrecy of self, or intentionally deceitful performances are a part of life, and as such are
a part of a great deal of literature. The following paper examines the significance of acting and performance in Charlotte Brontes "Villette" and George Eliots "Middlemarch." These two novels
offer us very different, yet also very similar, illustrations of how society demands a certain amount of performance from people in particular social classes. Women had to remain loyal to
families and husbands and needed to constantly perform for others, never really being given the option to be themselves and not perform. Men were given more leeway, but still were
expected to behave in certain ways if they wished to get ahead in society. Through many different realities these people needed to perform, or act, in different ways in different
situations in their particular society. The paper discusses each novel separately and then discusses the two through comparison and contrast. While presenting many different perspectives, the essay primarily focuses on
how the authors use the notion of acting and performance to highlight truths about the demands of society and how such a loss of identity is not a positive reality.
Villette This particular novel is one that is narrated by Lucy Snowe. Lucy is the one character we know full well to be acting and putting on performances
