in awkward situations. Through magical intervention we see people fall in love with individuals they do not normally love, and the play ends with everyone essentially living happily ever after. There are many different elements to this play, not the least of which is a part, in Act III, where some players enter into the forest to practice a play they will perform for Theseus the Duke of Athens. The following paper examines Act III, both Scenes I and II, and discuss their relevance and importance to the play. Act III In the beginning of Act III we are already aware of the confusion that is ensuing because of Pucks involvement due to Oberons demands. This is inadvertently playing into the hands of the young lovers Hermia and Lysander. They desire to wed but Theseus has agreed with laws that state she must marry who he says, and that person is Demetrius. Demetrius, however, is loved by another, Helene. In the first two acts of this play we see the tension and we begin to see the chaotic results of Pucks involvement. With Act III we are given the players of an upcoming play. They have nothing to do with the love that the lovers are feeling, and nothing to do with the prank that Oberon is playing through Puck. They happen to enter into the midst of the chaos however, and as such we see many important factors. For one thing, they are individuals who are not involved in the story that is developing in the forest. The fact that they are common individuals, perhaps representative of the audience, presents the viewer with an understanding of the incredibly comical nature of the story.
