dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than
his nature will allow." This is a very powerful statement, or argument, and one that many people may have different reactions to. While it may be nice to be ignorant
of expanding knowledge and discoveries, especially during the time of the new European societies of the 19th century, it also appears that such knowledge is important if one is to
make a difference in their world. With that in mind the following paper examines what Marx, in "The Communist Manifesto," and Mill, in "On Liberty," may have had to say
about Frankensteins comment. Marx With a basic understanding of how "The Communist Manifesto" illustrates class struggles one can likely argue that Marx would have been opposed to the
comments made by Dr. Frankenstein. It is likely that his reaction would have argued that mankind, when confined to one small locale and given no information or new knowledge, will
only further imbed themselves in a system that does them wrong. If people do not strike forward and look to gain new knowledge, they cannot improve their own situations for
they will assume that the only way to live is the way in which they have been living. Marxs examination of capitalism may be, to some, an indication that
branching out is wrong. But, only through such an examination can we see a better path. Through seeing other possibilities, and seeing that they are perhaps wrong in their approach
to and treatment of, the people, one can see the better options. Such options, or improvements, could not be envisioned if we were to keep our heads down and our
