public consciousness with the publication of a book by Robert Angus Smith in England in 1872. In this book, "Air and Rain: The Beginning of a Chemical Climatology",
Smith made several key observations. One of the most important of these was the fact that sulfate (SO42-) concentrations in rain were greater near cities and in particular near
coal burning plants. It wouldnt be until the 1950s that the problem of acid rain would be recognized as a regional problem in Europe. It wouldnt be until
the 1970s, however, that acid rain was recognized as a potential problem in the U.S. and Canada. Acid rain is one of the
most concerning environmental phenomena of our time. It can come in both wet and dry forms. It is the deposition of acidic substances on the earths surface.
In the wet from of acid rain these acids are carried to the earth from the atmosphere by precipitation. The dry form of acid rain is the result of
the gravitational settling of acidic particles. Acid rain can be either acidic or alkaline, with the acidic classification being applied to that deposition which is lower than seven on
the pH scale and the alkaline classification being applied to those depositions which are above seven on the pH scale. It has taken a tremendous impact on the ecology
of our natural areas, geologic integrity, and more anthropomorphic concerns as agriculture and construction issues. The commonly used construction materials of limestone, marble, and sandstone are particularly susceptible to
the ravages of acid rain. Acid rain occurs as a result of manmade pollutants which are suspended in the atmosphere.
