she once observed, "are about the action of grace on a character who is not very willing to accept it" (Wyatt 66). The central conflict which drove her stories
was the inner conflict suffered by a character, followed by an "epiphany... [that] comes about as a consequence of that conflict" (Browning 17). OConnor recognized that violence was an
inherent part of modern society, but she was also acutely aware that this violence, no matter how senseless, could serve as an essential instrument of this newfound perception. She
remarked, "Violence is strangely capable of returning my characters to reality and preparing them to accept their moment of grace" (112). Three stories in which OConnors characters experience grace
under pressure are "A Good Man is Hard to Find," "Greenleaf," and "A Late Encounter with the Enemy," but the irony is this grace is only achieved at the moment
of their deaths. The 1955 short story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" appears to be a rather innocuous family drama, but as with most OConnor works, looks
are deceiving. A judgmental and moralistic grandmother is preparing for a vacation with her son, the emotionally distant Bailey, his wife and their three children. Hearing of the
escape of a dangerous Florida killer known only as The Misfit and his band of thugs provides yet another opportunity for Grandmother Baileys hollow platitudes. After having the misfortune
of getting a flat tire on a deserted road, the Baileys cross paths with the murderous gang and experience every persons worst nightmare. As each member of her family
is taken into the woods and systematically slaughtered, the grandmother nervously engages in a religious dialogue with The Misfit about Jesus. The convict has no patience for her sermon,
