The standards list that the NCTE offers at their site coincides, basically, with the published standards for fifth grade language arts standards for the State of California and probably also resembles the standards that may apply in the state of the student researching this topic. The following research, first of all, offers a brief summation of these standards and then offers specific strategies that can help fifth grade students in mastering these standards. The first NCTE standard addresses the need to expose students to a wide-range of texts, which encompass both fiction and non-fiction, classic and contemporary works. The second standard states that students should read from different periods to develop a broad understanding of human experience. The third standard states that student should be able to apply a wide range of strategies in order to "comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts" (NCTE). Subsequent standards the need for student to communicate effectively, using both vocal and written forms; apply their knowledge of language structure; conduct research on issues of interest; use a variety of technological and informational sources; and respect diversity (NCTE). Helping students to achieve these goals requires a variety of learning strategies. For example, research indicates that content area literacy promotes attainment of greater language arts skill levels. Content area literacy refers to the "ability to use reading, writing and study strategies to learn subject matter across the curriculum" (Loranger 239).
