As the literature review will show, there are typical gaps between socio-economic backgrounds, races and cultures. The literature will also show there are other reasons some children achieve and some do not. Some of the variables related to student achievement are family background, environmental social contexts in which the child develops, commitment to education, motivation and a number of personal traits. Teacher expectations, teacher attitudes, school climate and school culture also influence how well a child will perform in school. This paper explores some of the many different variables and factors that impact learning. The paper also provides examples of what some schools have done to increase academic performance. The action plan, presented in a table format, includes two specific objectives, to increase teacher awareness of the cultural backgrounds of students they teach and to reduce the achievement gap. Strategies includes professional development seminars, adopting cooperative learning approaches and using whatever technology is available to the teacher. Literature Review Variables that Influence Achievement There are numerous individual, family and school variables affect and influence the achievement of students (Stewart, 2007). Researchers have been trying to find the reasons some children/students achieve and others do not for decades (Stewart, 2007). Different researchers have suggested that school commitment, school attachment, and school climate each has an impact on student achievement (Stewart, 2007). Research that investigates these types of variables are following an "ecological theory of human development" (Stewart, 2007, p. 16) as designed by Bronfenbrenner (Stewart, 2007). Bronfenbrenner argued that children "develop in a multitude of social contexts" (Stewart, 2007, p. 16).
