one new mother is surprised to hear her nurse offer Tylenol after delivery of her new baby. When used properly, acetaminophen has been
found repeatedly to be safe and effective. Overuse, however, or combining it with alcohol can lead to liver and kidney failure. Acute overdose needs to be treated as
an emergency situation. Acetaminophen overdose is not always intentional. Because it is so very safe and effective, individuals commonly mistakenly believe that
if some of the drug is effective, then more certainly should produce better results. Others may simply misinterpret dosage directions. Still others develop the habit of reaching for
the Tylenol bottle in response to any insignificant ache or pain. Paradoxically, Tylenol used too frequently for headache can lead to the onset of chronic headache.
The purpose here is to review acetaminophens toxic effects on the body and the process of dealing with overdose. Attention to patient education also is
included. Public Perceptions There are many acetaminophen products available over the counter, and not all are created equally in terms of individual dosage.
The Tylenol brand alone is available in several strengths and forms, and there are many private-label generics available as well. Because standard dosage of most over the counter
