Von Huben 10/2010 Please Introduction Perhaps more than in any other type of organization except maybe medicine, its crucial to have accountability in the armed forces. Military personnel are sworn to defend the nation, which often means putting their lives on the line. Few if any other professions require their practitioners to get shot at as a condition of employment. Therefore, its crucial that the Army and the other services have strict accountability: people need to know who is responsible for their well-being, and that that person can be counted on to perform their duties. This paper considers the importance of accountability in the Army and the adverse effects that can occur in an organization when accountability is lacking. Discussion There is a recent example of what can happen when accountability is lacking. On July 13, 2008, troops identified as "foreign fighters" ambushed a US outpost in Wanat province in Afghanistan, leaving nine paratroopers dead and 27 wounded (Weinstein, 2010). There was a tremendous-and now largely forgotten-outcry about this botched operation; people attributed the failure to a number of causes, but conservative blogger Herschel Smith, who has never served but whose son is a Marine, says that the troops were decimated because they were "outnumbered about 6:1 (300+ to about 50), they were on a poor choice of terrain, they had poor logistics, they suffered lack of air and artillery support, and most importantly, they simply were never given the proper number of troops or the resources to engage in force protection, much less robust force projection" (Smith, ...
