Walker Jones Elementary School, a Comprehensive School composed of 360 regular education and 26 hearing impaired students, houses pre-kindergarten through six grade and offers a full-day kindergarten. The 2001-2002 school years professional staff consists of fifteen classroom teachers and nine specialists who work in the areas of art, vocal music, instrumental music, media, technology, physical education, reading, math, and a science/math lab. Walker Jones special education department consists of 2 special education teachers instructing the regular education population and seven special education teachers servicing the hearing impaired students. Walker Jones Elementary School is the setting for specific assessments, including performance assessments of their reading readiness program. In recent years, the focus on assessments and the integration of assessment data has become an important component of educational planning in this setting. Goals and Objectives The goals and objectives of assessments and the call for greater accountability are linked to a variety of issues that have influenced the process of educational assessments since the 1980s. These issues including things like gender bias and problems that stem from the diversification of the classroom population. Considering the impacts of these factors, then, is imperative to the successful assessments and improvements in performance outcomes in educational settings like Walker Jones Elementary School.
