literary genre were regarded. Novalis, the pseudonym of Georg Phillip Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg (1772-1801) is an author and philosopher who was
highly influential in regards to early German Romanticism. In her review of a novelized biography of Novalis, Laurie Morrow comments that Novalis was a highly influential writer who greatly
influenced Romanticism, adding that "Romanticism elevates sensibility above sense, the nonrational and transcendental above the rational and the pragmatic" (Morrow 296). This view of literature and poetry appears to be
precisely the perspective to which Lukacs finds fault in the poetry and perspective of Novalis. The following discussion draws on the work of Lukacs in order to relate Lukacs perspective
on the how Novalis perceived and understood the purpose of poetry. From a young age, Lukacs admired Novalis, identifying closely with Novalis perspective
