by the death of one person or another, while others may well pass through such realities without any serious alterations to their own identity. The following paper examines domestic tragedy
as it affects Macon from Anne Tylers "Accidental Tourist" and Ian from Tylers "Saint Maybe." Accidental Tourist In this story
we have a man, Macon, who is dealing with the death of his son, or the murder of his son. He is married, but with the pressure of dealing with
such a tragedy his identity is becoming incredibly vulnerable and frightened. As such his marriage begins to crumble until it is over. He is in a position where he cannot
nurture a relationship at the same time he is trying to nurture himself and come to grips with the reality of it all.
Macon is essentially a frightened individual overall and the death of his son only compounds the weaknesses he possesses. He becomes more and more reclusive and more and more panic
ridden. At one point he is in a restaurant and is remembering one time when his son was 2 or 3 years of age. The child had run into the
street to get a ball and Macon was incredibly frightened, yelling "no" at the boy and unable to do nothing more as a truck came around the corner. In this
moment he saw the death of his son and also saw how he quickly adjusted to the fact, realizing that the loss was great, but yet a future without the
