otherwise. Academic dishonesty does no individual any good in the long run and it is something that can severely harm them and affect those around them in many different ways. The following paper examines the consequences and the affects of academic dishonesty. Academic Dishonesty There are many reasons why people choose to be academically dishonest in the first place and many of those reasons may seem innocent enough. For example, a student may blatantly cheat on an exam or a paper, only once, because of many reasons such as being tired or sick or confused. Or, as one author notes, "Common excuses for students behaviour, as cited by students, faculty and staff, include, students are pressured to succeed, students are distracted with extracurricular activities and part-time jobs, and finally, students do not know any better" (FitzGerald, 2007). There are also ways of being academically dishonest that are very hard to perceive and thus understand. For example, some people do not know how to properly cite a source they have used and will inadvertently end up committing plagiarism without even knowing it. In essence, there are many ways in which a person can be academically dishonest. This paper does not necessarily address the conditions involving those who are ignorant of proper citation but rather those who knowingly involve themselves in academic dishonesty. One author notes that "Basically, cheating is lying about what is ones own work or about its relative value" and then they go on to quote "Emerson, perhaps Americas most serious thinker" who argued that, "Every violation of truth is not only a sort of suicide in the liar but is a stab at the health of human society" (McShane, 2008).
