to hear that all is going well and that their child has no real problems, knowledge or skill deficits, or signs of a learning disability. For my younger son, this
sums up my experiences with teachers, as Alex had no real problems. Polite, well behaved and with a phenomenal memory, my younger son listened, paid attention in class, and had
no trouble making good grades, As and Bs virtually every report card period. I remember my meeting with his first-grade teacher and how she stated that Alex was the ideal
student. This was not my experience with my oldest son, Matt. While Alex could learn just from listening and had no trouble with learning how to read, Matt was
(and is) a kinetic learner. He learns by seeing and doing and not from simply listening or reading. When he was in the fourth grade, the teacher pointed out at
a meeting that Matt had issues with reading fluently. When he was asked to read aloud, he would run all the words together, never stopping for commas or periods.
It was clear that he was reading each individual word, thinking of each word, and not the sentence as a whole. Consequently, his comprehension of what he read was awful.
The teacher who pointed this problem out to me was very sympathetic and helpful. I had a good impression of this teacher from the very beginning of the
school year. She began the year by sending Matt a handwritten postcard inviting him to orientation day, which is the day before classes begin. During this 2-hour period, parents help
children arrange supplies in their desks and cubbies and everyone gets to meet the teacher. At the school Open House (which is just for parents), this teacher introduced herself briefly
