primarily one woman. However, in the story of this one woman we see other characters whose lives are also reflective of the society in which they live, a society that is demeaning and all but impossible to rise above. These characters are African American and they live under the control of the white society as well as men, both black and white. One of the most powerful characters in her novel is Sofia. While Sofia is not the primary character she is the one character in the book who offers up the black experience with the white world, and also offers up a look at a strong and determined woman who almost loses her identity, but comes out triumphant in the end. The following paper examines the character of Sofia in three different areas. The paper discusses Sofia and abuse, Sofia and redemption, and Sofia and Triumph. Sofia and Abuse In the beginning of the novel we see Sofia as a powerful woman, a woman with opinions and a woman who is not used to be shoved around by anyone. She has a mind of her own and apparently will not be mistreated by anyone, least of all her husband. She is a proud woman. But, her husband is told that Sofia is a woman who does not know her place. She should not be allowed to talk back to her husband, or state her own opinions. Her husband Harpo is told that a womans place is to remain silent, something that is not in Sofias nature at all.
