The terrorist group Abu Sayyaf is based on the southern Philippines. Barreveld (2001) traces its origin back to the 1970s and the end of
the Moros War where the Philippine army stamped out much of the Muslim resistance that had sprang up after World War II in response to a Christianization of the region.
The group refers to itself as "Al-Harakat Al-Islamiyya" which translates to mean the Islamic Movement. Abu Sayyaf is indeed a part of the Islamic movement but it is
a part of the radical Islamic movement. It has terrorized people throughout the Philippines all in the name of trying to effect the establishment of an Islamic state, within
yet independent from, the Philippines. Numerous scholars have devoted volumes to defining terrorism and distinguishing between it and other acts
of non-terrorist violence and control. Hoffman (2006) emphasizes the error that has characterized recent media accounts in labeling such a diverse array of violent acts as terrorism simply because
they are directed against society as a whole. While acts like tampering with drugs on the supermarket shelves are abhorrent, they are not truly terrorism. Modern terrorism is
