Due to the increase of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents, health providers are faced with questions concerning the timing of screening procedures. Therefore, the researchers designed a study
that determined the percentage of seventh graders in two rural Pennsylvania public school systems during the fall semester of 2001 were at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Method:
A descriptive, non-experimental design was utilized, which generated data for analysis from multiple sources. Health history and behavioral data was obtained via a questionnaire that was filled out by a
parent or guardian for each student/participant. The appropriateness of this instrument was evaluated a panel of experts. The age, ethnicity, and gender of the participants, as well as acanthosis nigricans,
was noted. ("Acanthosis nigricans" (AN) refers to a skin disorder that consists of darker area of skin that appear on the neck, under the arms and in the groin, which
is associated with poor nutritional habits and insulin resistance.) The students were also assigned a number in order to preserve their anonymity. The first question was used to establish a
criterion for inclusion in the study as all children previously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were excluded. Body mass index (BMI) calculations were made for each participant and this
measurement was based on the latest federally-approved growth charts, which take into consideration the growth spurts that are to be expected in adolescence. Blood pressure readings were also taken for
