In order to understand the complexities of this issue, it is necessary first to understand the scope of the problem and the financial, organizational and social issues for companies in addressing both workplace injuries and overall absenteeism. Other considerations must be assessed, including regulatory concerns, the role of OSHA in determining safety protocols, the influence training and motivational programs have had on the absentee rates and the costs of absenteeism in terms of productivity, replacement services, and temporary employment, all of which impact the workplace team. Statement of the Problem The problem of absenteeism is on the rise. Researchers have recognized that the issues of workplace injury and workplace stress can play a significant role in determining absenteeism rates. Increasingly competitive workplace scenarios and the development of industries and service sectors that require a high degree of professional competency has also determined an increase in workplace stress and concerns over absenteeism.
