United States. And, at the center of that war stands one man, Abraham Lincoln. Because of this there has been a great deal written on Lincoln and his actual level of involvement in the war itself. James McPhersons book "Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution" is a book that offers up 7 different essays that look at Lincoln and look at the war as a second revolution. The following paper analyzes this work. Conclusion The first essay presented in the work discusses how the Civil War was truly a radical event that altered the face and structure of the United States. The nation went from a slave holding country to a free one and that is a very powerful change that perhaps speaks of revolutionary change. In addition, the essay illustrates how the political power in the nation shifted from the South, where all the agricultural wealth was maintained, to the North, where the wealth was perhaps seen in the political minds and the Industrial Revolutions influences. In this particular essay McPherson appears to be particularly intrigued by the change in how we looked at government. Before the Civil War people were interested in a world that protected them from negative government, where the people had the rights to rid themselves of the negative liberty. But, after the Civil War the approach became one that focused on protection rather than government oppression. In the second essay we are given a look at Lincolns role in the revolution itself.
