assassinated. In those days it seems that running mates were not always friendly with one another or even of the same mind about a great number of issues. In the
case of these two it seems that they were very different men, and thus one is perhaps led to wonder if Lincoln or Johnsons plans would have been better, assuming
Lincoln had not been assassinated. The following paper examines the men and their possible plans, arguing that Lincoln was a man of far more powerful and intelligent plans than Johnson.
Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson In looking at the plans or the pursuits of the individuals it is first important to really look at who the men were,
as individuals, for that gives a great deal of insight into where their plans were focus. For example, it seems that Lincoln was very much a man of and for
the people, and the Union, as opposed to Johnson who, according to Lincoln, was "a queer man" (MrLincolnWhiteHouse.org). Lincoln stated this after Johnson had asked if, in becoming Vice President,
it was necessary for him to be at the inauguration (MrLincolnWhiteHouse.org). And, to top that off it seems that Johnson "fortified himself with liquor in order to prepare for his
swearing-in as Vice President" (MrLincolnWhiteHouse.org). In truth, this does not appear to be the actions or thoughts of a man who was prepared to have solid and sustainable ideas or
plans, for he was obviously not prepared for his role or a position in office. One can well note that Lincoln was a man who struggled a great deal,
