II. THE LIFE AND TIMES There was never a question of how influential Heschel would be to Judaism, inasmuch as he possessed a rare combination of precociousness, clarity and genuine
interest, a collection of characteristics that established a gift so obvious that " those nearest to him were convinced he was destined for greatness" (Novak, 1998, pp. 63-67). There is
little argument how Heschel is still considered "the most significant Jewish thinker ever to live and work in America" (Novak, 1998, pp. 63-67), a distinction punctuated by embracing religious influence
in such a way as to provide Jews with the ability to discuss God in tones other than hushes and whispers; his re-establishing the value of religious discourse allowed an
"intelligent passion" (Novak, 1998, pp. 63-67) where fear and trepidation once lurked. According to Novak (1998), an individual who personally experienced the teachings of Heschel and attributes this special
opportunity to have helped guide his own life, "it is now simply impossible to think through the sources of the Jewish tradition-as opposed to merely describing them-without Heschel being either
