this day. Discussion This paper is too short to describe anything as large as the First Crusade, which is really a war, in detail. It can only answer a series
of questions and provide minimal information. Emperor Alexus: The spelling is actually Alexius, sometimes Alexis; he was the Byzantine Emperor and had seen the Seljuk Turks conquer most of the
Byzantine Empire (Nelson). When the Turks were in sight of Constantinople, Alexius wrote to Pope Urban II the letter asking for help (Nelson). Alexius "had seen a group of western
knights under the command of Count Robert of Flanders" and was impressed by their fighting ability, which prompted his request for help from the West. Pope Urban II was Pope
during the "Investiture Controversy," possibly the greatest struggle between church and state in European history (Nelson). The controversy was over who would nominate ("invest") officials, and led to a split
in the church, so that "antipopes" appeared. At approximately the time Alexius asked for help, Urban was embroiled in such a controversy; although he was elected Pope, an antipope named
