its history; why its popular, who uses it; and its probable future. Discussion People who text a great deal-and some people send thousands of texts a month-are completely baffled when
non-texters dont jump on their bandwagon. They dont understand why some folks dont want to be connected to their friends and families 24/7/365. They like the immediate communication and the
sense that they are up to date with the very latest trends and developments, not to mention the latest gossip. People who dont text, on the other hand, are probably
sick and tired of being ignored while their companions type away, oblivious to the real person standing next to them. Teachers are fed up with trying to compete with text
messages, and they are fast becoming one of the leading causes of traffic accidents. Cell phones were bad enough; texting drivers are a menace. But this trend is not like
the hula hoop; its not likely to go away mostly because it can serve a real purpose. The trend toward texting seems to be a natural outgrowth of the use
of cell phones, which in turn are a product of the "need for speed" that consumes society today. Anything that is newer and faster is almost always grabbed up by
consumers; today everyone has a microwave and cant think of preparing a meal without it. Thirty years ago they were rare. Twenty years ago cell phones were exotic and for
the very wealthy; today they outnumber landlines. The love affair that Americans and other developed societies have with technology means that trends like texting are going to continue and become
