described as pro-life, abortion is tantamount to murder of a human life. While all of these interpretations may be valid, they all combine collectively to emphasize the contention that
abortion is foremost a personal decision. Such a radical life decision is never entered into lightly; more often than not, it is a harrowing experience with abortion often serving
as the most humane outcome. The notion that abortion is a personal decision reflects a respect for an individuals autonomy, accepts that a fetus does not constitute a human
being, is supported by Supreme Court decisions, and represents a practical solution to problems that should be privately handled by the individual and not by society. Professor of Philosophy J.
David Velleman (1992) argues that regarding abortion as a personal decision represents a respect for individual autonomy. Employing Kantian ethics to the topic, Velleman (1992) contends that autonomy can
be valued either by "a persons capacity for self-determination" or "a persons opportunities for self-determination" (p. 665). According to Velleman (1992), autonomy involves a critical evaluation of values and
desires, and to act in accordance with them after careful reflection. Valuing a persons self-determination capacity can only be achieved through respect; the opportunities, therefore, cannot be realize without
respect for the capacity for self-determination (Velleman, 1992). Respect for a womans decision to have an abortion represents respect for her personal autonomy or ability to make her own
