moral concern and as such it raises a great deal of debate, along with emotions. There are many who desire to see abortion outlawed in the nation, and many who
believe that it is something that should remain as a legalized option in the life of a woman. It is a very touchy and volatile subject because, at the foundation
of the argument, lies the focus on whether or not abortion is actually murder. With all of this in mind the following paper argues that the legalization of abortion is
right. Abortion in the United States One of the first arguments that many women, and men, have in relationship to abortion involves
the governments power. By making abortion illegal the government has control over a womans body. This was also considered the case when birth control pills were first introduced, for it
was argued that the government has no right to dictate a womans ability to become pregnant. As one author notes, "By making abortion illegal, youre introducing a slippery slope that
gives government control over a womans body. Youre taking away a personal freedom" (Messerli). Another argument in favor of legalized abortion involves
the fact that regardless of whether or not abortions are legal, women will still get abortions. These were, and are, referred to as "back alley" abortions because they are perceived
to have been done in the back alleys, in filthy and dangerous conditions. In the past, prior to the legalization of abortion, women would go to great lengths to get
an abortion and sometimes they would die in the process. Some would even attempt to do the abortion themselves with coat hangers and ultimately bleed to death in many cases.
