a couple. It is a very enlightening study of how people, especially couples perhaps, communicate, or fail to communicate. In this particular story we are presented with a couple who
are subtly discussing an abortion, a very touchy and never fully disclosed topic. In the following paper we discuss the conversation between the two as it relates to the abortion.
Abortion "An American man and a girl sit drinking beer in a bar by a train station in northern Spain making self-consciously ironic, brittle small talk....Eventually, the two discuss
an operation, which the man earnestly reassures her is awfully simple . . . not really an operation at all . . . all perfectly natural" (Holmes hemingway1697-des-.html). They are
obviously very restrained in their conversation for the girl, whom we presume to actually be a woman, is obviously frightened and confused. He tries to convince her by stating, "Ill
go with you and Ill stay with you all the time. They just let the air in and then its all perfectly natural" (Hemingway NA). His words are not
convincing and they constantly seem to skirt the issue. She wonders and asks, "Then what will we do afterward?" (Hemingway NA). He claims that everything will be just the way
it was: "Well be fine afterward. Just like we were before" (Hemingway NA). She wants to know how he is so sure and he replies that, "Thats the only thing
that bothers us. Its the only thing thats made us unhappy" (Hemingway NA). From this we can see that the man is completely convinced that the abortion should take place.
