pharmacists have refused to fill abortion pills and some doctors will not perform abortions. Yet, the role of the ultrasound technician is largely diagnostic and he or she does not
generally counsel women. How does the abortion issue affect the role of the ultrasound technician? At first, the influence of the ultrasound technician may not be clear. In general, a
pregnancy test is administered and usually an early urine sample and quick physical exam is all that is required to diagnose a pregnancy. The ultrasound technician hardly has a role.
Yet, there are women who want children but may decide to abort one or more fetuses in the case of multiple pregnancy. Also, ultrasound is considered a right in some
states. For example, in Wisconsin, the physician is supposed to tell the patient of alternatives to abortion and inform them that they have the right to see the fetus via
ultrasound ("Karlin v. Foust," 1999). Clearly, the idea is that if a woman sees the picture of the fetus, she will be more inclined to keep the baby. Otherwise, the
concept of pregnancy is too vague. An ultrasound technician who is pro-life might encourage a patient to look at the image of the fetus on screen and perhaps even congratulate
her on the pregnancy. Another way for an ultrasound technician to promote a right to life stance, if that is the moral position she takes, is to encourage the
physicians she works with to use ultrasound. Why would this have a beneficial effect? Meyer & De Wolf (2005) write: "So disturbing has been the experience of observing abortion on
ultrasound monitors that many abortion doctors who have seen the procedure have refused to participate in abortions again" (p.62). Again, it is often the case that when ultrasound is necessary
