a heated debate concerning the morality of this decision. The pro-life position is that, basically, that all abortion is immoral, the "murder" of a child, and should be outlawed. The
opposing pro-choice camp expresses the equally extreme view that abortion is legitimate throughout pregnancy. Examination of these positions shows that both arguments are seriously flawed, but that there is room
for consensus, from the viewpoint of the majority of the American public, when reasonable restrictions are used to regulate abortion procedures. Professor of Christian ethics Beverly B. Harrison lists
certain characteristics that she feels define what it means to be a human being. Until one obtains these qualities, she argues that the question of "rights" does not apply. However,
while her criteria applies to fetuses, it could equally be applied to newborns and no one is suggesting that newborns can be indiscriminately destroyed. Essentially, this argument overlooks that fact
that a fetus develops continually throughout a pregnancy. If a fetus is healthy, there will come a point where it reacts to light and sound, kicks, gets the hiccups and
shifts position. To argue that this living entity is still equivalent to the clump of cells that it was a few months previously is ludicrous. There is a noticeable, discernable
difference that demands recognition. To argue that the mother still has to right to abort a late-term child because of emotional problem seems arbitrary in the extreme. Clearly, late-term abortion
should be done only for the most dire of reasons, such as when a baby has developed with birth defects so extremely that life itself will only constitute enduring pain.
