when people think of abortions, and the controversy that surrounds abortion, they imagine a first trimester abortion, an abortion done in the first three months of a womans pregnancy. However,
there are second and third trimester abortions done as well. The following paper examines the arguments surrounding third trimester abortions. The paper then finishes with an argument for banning third
trimester abortions. Pros and Cons One of the most powerful and important arguments in favor of keeping third trimester abortions legal is that which focuses on the abortion
movements desire to see abortion legal in all cases. The abortion proponents believe that if third trimester abortions are made illegal then this makes room for laws to eventually ban
all abortions. They argue that the right of a woman to choose is a right that should not be taken away under any circumstances. As one author notes, "Opposition to
partial-birth abortion is part of a strategy by anti-abortionists to ban abortion in general" (Hamilton, 2002). Another pro argument, and perhaps the most valid, is that third trimester abortions
need to remain legal for they truly concern the life and health of the woman. "In the third trimester, a woman whose health, whose future fertility, or whose life is
placed in jeopardy by the pregnancy, (by a fetus that is incompatible with life), is the only reason that that pregnancy can be terminated" (Life and Liberty for Women, 2004).
The proponents of this argument claim that such women who make this choice are women who wanted the baby. "This is not a woman who gets up one morning and
