one of the most controversial issues of our time. Abortion can be defined as the intentional termination of a pregnancy. While the definition itself does not vary according
to the age of the fetus, however, certain other factors do vary. Two of the most eminent of these involves the questions of the value of life itself and
the rights of a woman to control her own body and the right of the fetus to life. The intrinsic value of life
is a question which is constantly being considered in our courtrooms and in the halls of academia as well. It is a question which involves economist, philosophers, bioethicists and
numerous other professions and one to which the answer appears to vary according to just who is considering the question and around such particulars as whose life is being considered
(Thomas, 1998; Rolston, 1997). In the case of an unborn fetus this consideration becomes exceedingly complex. The right of a woman to control her own body is put
into balance against the right of a fetus to life. The underlying issue in all of the above arguments, however, is the right
of the fetus to live. As has been noted above, many in U.S. society assume that the right to life is a basic human value. The intrinsic value
of life and the right to life is a question which will find no one answer despite the amount of attention which is devoted to doing so. To gain
an understanding of the question of the intrinsic value of life and the factors which go into evaluating it, we can certainly look to the issue of abortion but unfortunately
