to personal opinions and beliefs far more than other political systems. To what degree is individuality incorporated into the system of democracy? According to the writings of John
Stuart Mill, individuality is the foundation of a progressive society and holds a place of importance within the democratic republic of the United States that was in the process of
developing during his lifetime. In the essay On Liberty, John Stuart Mill determined that the individual "must use observation to see, reasoning and judgment to foresee, activity to gather materials
for decision, discrimination to decide, and when he has decided, firmness and self-control to hold to his deliberate decision. And all these qualities he requires and exercises exactly in
proportion as the part of his conduct which he determines according to his own judgment and feelings is a large one" (262-63). The individual is a person who reasons
out his own beliefs and character and then proceeds to live in a manner consistent to these beliefs. Abortion is a religious issue as well as a medical and social
issue. The extreme range of emotions that are involved in the debate concerning abortion can be difficult for the woman in a situation where she must choose. Unfortunately,
in the United States, beliefs stand in opposition to one another as the right to life argument against abortion is set against the right to choose argument. For
