waste and protect the environment server a duel purpose, firstly to direct benefit to the environment and secondly the benefit of setting and example for other companies. An environmental audit looks at more than simply the measures that are being taken in order to protect the environment; it seeks to quantify the outputs in a clear manner so that the total impact can be measured and assessed and where possible compared with other companies and previous years. In some cases environmental audits may take the total inputs and outputs into consideration. At Abitibi Consolidated the full input and output details are not possible, for example the replanting of forestland, which included 60 million seedlings in 2004 (Abitibi Consolidated, 2004) will also create some capacity to reduce the output of greenhouse gases indirectly, however this audit looks only at the direct outputs. One of the main considerations of the environmentalist are the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. When looking at the emission over a period of time there has been a significant reduction in the output. The Canadian operations have been the most successful with a reduction of 42% in absolute terms between 1990 and 2005, when this is measured in terms of the intensity of production the level of emission per tine of tonne of paper that is produced this is a 48% reduction between 1990 and 2005 (Abitibi Consolidated, 2005). The global operations were also successful in making reduction, these were, a 38% reduction in absolute terms and the measurement per tonne of paper produced was down by 23%, however these measurements are for the years between 2000 and 2005 only (Abitibi Consolidated, 2005). Greenhouse gas emission are numerous, however, when they are measured the approach is to convert the non carbon dioxide (CO2) ...
