is a misconception that the black church is on unified entity, when in fact, there are as many differences within the black church as occur in the mainstream white churches.
Marcia Riggs book, Awake, Arise, and Act, offers insight into the role of women, past, present, and future, within the framework of the black church. Her suggestions offer the minister
a new perspective on how one might achieve balance, tolerance and integration within and among congregations of the 21st century. Spirituality and intrinsic community involvement have always been the hallmarks
of the black minister. From the example of Martin Luther King, Jr., one can see the tradition of the black minister. But what of the women? As in most
churches, the population in the black church is predominantly female while the leadership is male. Therefore, the women form the backbone of many churches and as of yet are still
accorded little leadership status in the pulpit or deaconships. Some religions have, in their defense, relaxed some of their more stringent laws in regard to women. For example, the Catholics
no longer believe that women have no souls, and as a general rule most Christian religions do not excommunicate women for the length of their hair, their choice of dress,
or their personal relationships. However, most religions, Christian or not, still do not value women as much as they value men. In addition, as women become more assertive in the
workplace, assume more of the professions which have formerly been held by male majority, it only makes sense that women should begin to reject those religions which subjugate a womans
uniqueness and equate it to the myth of evil or shame. In short, women are beginning to reject the teachings of the traditional churches which hold that they are inherently
