the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. In the days following the attack, consumer spending dropped because consumer confidence was terribly shaken.
Even before the attack, the economy was in a slump as consumer spending continued to weaken -- but following the attack, consumer
spending dropped off drastically. Avons stock has fallen 10 percent and to add insult to injury, economists predicted increasing unemployment, lower business profits, decreased discretionary spending and retrenchment by
both business and consumers. Nor was the news better from overseas -- markets such as Argentina and Brazil continued facing economic decline,
dragging Avon down with it. If there was any good news, it was that the Japanese market was at least rebounding from its own financial crisis from the mid-1990s.
Economics and terrorist attacks aside, although Avon enjoyed a strong reputation because of longevity and aggressive independent sales agents, the sales force
and its effectiveness was declining during the late 1990s (at least in the United States) as consumers became more sophisticated. The concept of the "Avon Lady" going door-to-door to
sell cosmetics was fast becoming outdated as the Company struggled to determine how to outsell its competition and to try to find new channels by which to sell cosmetics, jewelry
