the material offered in this work. Introduction and Background Nearly since the time that utilities became widely available, conventional wisdom has held that
those companies providing such utilities needed to operate on a monopolistic foundation, both to recoup their capital investment in infrastructure and to deliver their specific products more efficiently over their
own infrastructure networks. Some came to cry foul during the decade of the 1970s, claiming that because electric companies, cable companies and telephone companies were granted all available business
in all areas of the country, no other businesses could hope to break into the industry. The greater issue for the US government was that without any type of
competition at all, consumers were at the mercy of the companies that had to power to dictate who had access to their services and who did not.
Federal regulations prevented AT&T and the Bell system from charging consumers whatever they pleased. States Utilities Commissions since have turned into advocates for fair competition,
which in turn equates to greater consumer choice and much more competitive pricing. None of this and other changes that have occurred since the 1984 AT&T divestiture would have
happened, at least not in the ways that events unfolded once market forces were given a voice in the industry. The student should be aware that this paper is offered
