lead to a greater understanding of people who are deaf, and the universal tool that is ASL. Through studying various topics associated with both a person can better understand a
particular population of people in the nation, and also enrich their own understanding of what it is to be deaf. The following paper examines ASL information, what is deafness, deaf
history, the deaf community and education, and the coclear implant. ASL Information ASL, as noted, is the American Sign Language. As the name denotes, it is sign language
for America, primarily the United States. There are many different languages in sign language. As one author notes, "No one form of sign language is universal. For example, British Sign
Language (BSL) differs notably from ASL. Different sign languages are used in different countries or regions" (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 2008).
In relationship to ASL and other languages, such as Braille, one could argue that they have similarities in that they both incorporate symbols as opposed to letters. For
example, a Braille sign may signify an object or emotion, just as sign language can signify an object or emotion; rather than spelling that object out. For example, there may
be a symbol for "love" or for "car" that does not incorporate spelling something out as with a written language. As such ASL is not really a written language, although
one could claim that through written words, followed by signing pictures, there is a written element to it in some cases. What is Deafness
