filmmakers have in their collective history a gathering of films which merit study for the technical integrity and innovations to the film industry. Andrzej Wajda, a filmmaker took the novel by Jerzy Andrzejewski and created, Ashes and Diamonds, a film whose mastery of light and shadow still stand as a classic example of characterization through cinematography. The setting of the film is in Poland on the last day of World War II. Poland has been delivered from the German occupation, but are still struggling to determine what sort of government will rule. The moral, social, and political climates are, therefore, charged. Majek is an assassin for the anti-communist movement and has been sent to eliminate the local Party chairman. Andrzej, his partner, and himself find the man they are to kill near a rural church, then kill him. Afterwards, they head to town for a drink and to report that they have been successful in their mission. Just as Majek is calling their superiors he notices their target walking into a nearby building, unharmed. Theyve killed the wrong man. Now Majek is faced with the dilemma of attempting to carry out the assignment, even in the very populated area, or of abandoning it. To make matters worse, he has feelings for one of the girls, Christine, who works in the bar. To reinforce this unsettled feeling of the country, Wadja had the characters as undecided and directionless as the country. This is also evident in the confusion which follows as one attempts to determine who the villains are and who are the heroes. Of course, this is another technique one has to think on Wadjas part.
