the human spirit, or a comedy. Schindlers List, the 1993 movie directed by Steven Spielberg, as well as Benignis Life is Beautiful, both utilize the horrors of World War II
for their exploration of character. In fact, though these movies are separated by six or seven years, both share similar artistic elements. The student may remember that Schindlers List
was the dramatized account of Oskar Schindlers work to hide those Jews that were being persecuted by Hitlers war machine. He used his unsuccessful businesses as fronts to
move various families to safety. On another level, of course, this movie is about a man finding his true calling in life, rising above who he has been, to be
who he should have become a long time ago. Of similar note is Guido in Beningnis film. Guido and his son are rounded up and hauled off to a concentration
camp. However, Guido constructs a carefully crafted series of lies, wrapped in humor, to fool his son into believing that they are on a reality game show of sorts. He
manages to hide his son from the soldiers inside the camps until the end of the war. During all of the suffering that goes on around them, he struggles to
keep the beauty in life intact for his son, determined that his sons innocence will not be turned into bitterness and hopelessness. It is through his work with his son
that others are influence to find and hold on to any bit of happiness or beauty that they can find, even in the middle of great suffering and ugliness. Speilbergs
