the Armed Forces. And instead of the technologically sound machine guns and automatically reloading rifles and hand grenades, the best artillery our ancestors had in fighting the American Revolution was
old- fashioned muskets. That infamous saying spouted by a Revolutionary War leader "dont fire till you see the whites of their eyes" was more for practicality - the only way
the American troops could do any damage against the British enemy was for the enemy to get close; close enough for the American soldiers to "see the whites of their
eyes." These days, however, U.S. soldiers can fire from miles away and strike their targets, because of "smart bombs" and sensor rifles.
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how artillery changed through four major wars in United States history: the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War and
the First World War. The paper will briefly list causes (as the causes have a direct bearing on what type of artillery was available) and study the guns and other
materiel that were used during each war. The first war to be fought by Americans, and on American soil was the American
Revolution, also known as the Revolutionary War. American soldiers were already prepared for war, having already fought the French and Indian Wars (PublicBookShelf, 2002). At the time, gun and artillery
