however, is the way in which human beings choose to congregate and socialize. Some ways in which humankind choose to socialize is of great benefit to themselves and others, and
other decisions may not be as beneficial. Two articles briefly examine this topic: Long Live Community and The Alien Payoff. In the article Long Live Community, the authors state that
ones health may also depend on the company one keeps. They use as an example the small Italian community of Roseto in Pennsylvania. This was a tight knit group in
the early fifties and sixties and the researchers said that upon observation it was a nearly classless society(Kawachi, et al, 383). Those who were affluent did not over indulge themselves,
nor did they go out of their way to be ostentatious in their choice of homes or other items. The local church served to reinforce these belief systems. What
was noticed was that the death rates were significantly lower than those in neighboring towns and cities. The diets were not that much different, and so, after a lengthy study
the researchers concluded that the sense of community, shared cultural values and lifestyles, was what had contributed to this remarkable statistic. Likewise, when the young people of Roseto grew up
and began to move out of Roseto and others began to come into the community, this cultural buffer was destroyed. After this, their statistics matched everyone else. The one
thing that one has to say against this article is that it assumes that there was no outside influence on Roseto at all during the fifties and sixties. However, unless
Roseto was kept in a vacuum, then this was impossible. Therefore, it was a conscious decision by the people in the town to adhere to the standards and to uphold
